I read with interest the article about the city manager firing your police chief for his dept. memo concerning out-of-shape policemen. What I found most interesting was rather than being concerned about the policemen\'s health issues(costs in medical expense upkeep of these policemen) and their physical lack of being able to perform their duties, your city manager was concerned about\"hurt feelings\". I think if I were a policeman there I would be embarrassed if I was one of the fatties and embarrassed if I was a health conscious employee that worked with a group of people that put their \"feelings\" above their physical readiness to perform their duties. The article on MSN has made your city and those policemen look foolish not the memo content. As the old saying goes \" if the shoe fits...\"

i live in jacksonville florida, both of my sons, are poliecemen, and i am always warning them about there weight gain, and how disgusting it is for a man too eat himself into bad health,my opinion is the cheif was 100% correct in what he did, you know as well as we all know, the duties that are required of a polieceman are often very physical, and being more than 20 pounds over weight will definately have an effect on his ability too preform his duties, not too mention what it cost tax payers in health care for these obease poliecemen. Law enforcement people have a job too do, and if there more than 20 lbs over, this tends too slow there reflex time, which in there job, is extreamly critical.the firing of the poliece cheif, sounds very much politically movated, could the city manager have an ax too grind?
SMALL TOWNS JUST AS IN BIG CITY'S ITS SOP, IF YOUR NOT IN THE CLICK, YOUR HISTORY. DO THE RIGHT THING HIRE THE CHEIF BACK, AND FIRE THE CITY MANAGER, AND LET THE CHEIF DO HIS JOB !!

I THINK IF THE CHEIF MADE THAT COMMENT IT IS OUT OF CONCERN FOR THE OFFICERS AND THE CITIZENS OF THE COMMUNITY.IF A OFFICER HAD TO CHASE SOME ONE IN THE LINE OF DUTY HOW COULD THEY PROTECT THE COMMUNITY NOT TO MENTION THEIR OWN HEALTH WITH A RISK OF HEART ATTACKS AND OTHER INJURIES IN THE LINE OF DUTY THE CHEIF WAS DOING HIS JOB!!!!!

SHAME on the City Managers or Person that made Police Chief Paul Goward resign, when he was only doing the whole City a
favor by wanting an able productive police force.
He should not only have his job back, but have a raise for trying to see that you and the whole city has police officers that can do their job,and keep the city safe.
We were so DISGUSTED to hear that out of shape officers were more important than the publics safety.SHAME,SHAME ON THE SUPPOSED City Leaders.
We are so disgusted to see an officer running (JIGGLING) after a law breaker.
The ones that should have lost their job, is the over weight officers that took offence at the TRUTH. I guess the old addage that TRUTH HURTS is true. Reinstate the only one who really cares about the city, Police Chief Paul Goward.
In my opinion the over weight officers just don\\\'t care enough
about the city.

Oh my gosh! the wimps find it hard to obey orders. Waaah! For heavens sake, the police department should be run just like the military. After all, aren't they there to protect us citizens from harm. Show some real courage and forget about saving face and hire that Police Chief back. In todays world with all of its fakery, there are still those who call it like it is. I say, give this Police chief a medal for having the courage to run his department the way it should be run. It's an authority issue with his men. I think you fired the wrong person.

I am 100% behind police chief Paul Gowards' actions to try and get the officers in his department to get fit. I am a retired California Highway Patrol officer and read the article in the Orange County Register. The CHP used to have a mandatory yearly fitness test to encourage its officers to maintain a certain standard. It made vast difference in getting officers fit. It was subsequently dropped because of the large number of officers that were claiming injuries while doing their selective excersises in preparation for the yearly physical performance test. The problem with fat police officers is a national problem. It is a reflection of what is going on in society in general. In the CHP case, the officers received extra pay for staying fit. The job of police officers is stressful as it is. One moment you are sitting in a patrol car and things are normal and the next you placed in a situation were the adrenalin is charged and your cardio vascular system is put to the test. Also your appearance and how people percieve you in uniform can play a big role in preventing assaults. It would be a tragedy if the people responsible for firing the chief do not take another look and do the right thing and that is to re-hire chief Goward and implement a fitness program for its officers. I think that in the long run the officers and their families will thank the chief.

I think all emergency employee's, i.e firemen and police officers should have to stay in top shape just as we had to do in the Army. It could save their own live as well as being able to to serve and protect the people they are paid to protect. All cities should have some type of physical training and test as we did in the military. I think the Police Chief should be commended for reconizing this as a problem, not fired! Not to mention that it could cost tax payers more money to take care of the out of shape police officers be cause of medical problems due to overweight....

To the fired Police Chief! Please, please come to Houston, Texas. We need individuals for our Police force (badly!!) and you sound like the kind of guy we would love to have here. Heck, why don\'t you give Mayor White a call? We have a bunch of great officers, but are at the short end of the stick when it comes to chiefs and decision makers, and with your experience and backbone, you could really help us out. What do you say?

As a former police office from Jacksonville and Orlando I am ashamed of the ***** who are the city officals that fired the chief. Your overweight officers are real pigs. In my day, we took being called a pig as Pride, Intergity, Guts...in your department, your overwight offices are nothing but farm pigs..fat, unkempt, and an embarrassment to the city. This does not infer, they are not loyal and dedicated to effective law enforcement, but it does show a disrepect to their obligation. How can a fat *** apprehend a fleeing felon? Shoot him? Great, now let's just start shooting shoplifters....or perhaps people being served with jury judy summons...your city fathers should be ashamed at the message you are sending to the fat pigs...stay fat...you have job security...you can protect Krispy Cream.

City fathers, if you haven't given the chief back his job with a raise you are not doing your job very well. The officers that complained should be fired for not following orders. Who wants cry babies defending the public? Give them another donut and put
them on leave until they loose weight.

WELL IF THOSE POLICE OFFICERS HAD MORE SELF PRIDE THEY WOULD TRY TO STAY IN SHAPE AND LOOK PRESENTABLE. IF NOT FOR JUST ONE REASON ALONE, THEIR OWN WELL BEING AND PRIDE OF LOOKS??? JUST LIKE THAT TEST OF A BEAUTIFUL LADY TRYING TO TAKE A SURVEY SHE HAD A LINE WAITING TO GIVE HER ALL THE INFO SHE REQUESTED, BUT THAT SAME LADY LOOKING OVER WEIGHT AND SLOPPY, NOBODY WOULD EVEN TALK TO HER AND ALMOST RAN THE OTHER WAY !!! NEED WE SAY MORE. LOOK RESPECTABLE AND * GET * RESPECT. OTHER THAN THAT I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT THE MELBOURNE POLICE DO A PRETTY GOOD JOB AT PROTECTING OUR RESIDENTS.
